The Senator Alauya Alonto Cup is a four-day family event and sports fest of the family of the late Senator of the Philippines and 1935 Philippine Constitution delegate, Sultan sa Ramain Alauya Adiong Alonto which is annually celebrated at the Xavier Estates Country Club in Cagayan de Oro City.

The descendants of the 7 children of the late Senator converged in Xavier Estates covered court to officially start the opening of the cup usually with family games like sack race, Maria went to town and other fun events. All were in attendance from the only surviving daughter of the Senator, former Lanao del Sur Governor Princess Tarhata Alonto-Lucman, down to the youngest of his great great grandchildren.

The game categories were basketball, futsal, bowling, badminton (men and women) and volleyball (men and women). This family event is unique in a way that they did not only tie family bond with sports competition but also shared meals together from breakfast to dinner. Each night for the whole stretch of this remarkable family reunion, they were serenaded by local artists with live music and dances wherein everyone joined the fun which they called their evening fellowship nights.

At the culmination of the sports event and the end of the cup last May 1, the family held a gala night where I was privileged to be a part of as one of the Judges. Here, each of the 7 families dressed up according to their assigned era. In last year’s Cup, the theme for the gala night was Hollywood wherein all of the attendees came to the affair in characters. This year, the theme for the gala night was “Blast from the Past.”

It was like entering a time capsule bringing you back to the era of Charlie Chaplin, Al Capone, the Beatles, The Von Trapp family singers, Audrey Hepburn during the Hollywood golden years and the pop culture of the 80s. Everyone carried their assigned fashion periods so well from the raving 20s, the 30s of the Rockefeller glam & depression period, the glittery parties of the great Gatsby of the 40s & 50s, the vintage babydoll fashion of the 60s, the Hippies and the Brady bunch of the 70s up to the most recent loud and vibrant fashion wear of the 80s.

It was indeed a night of cultural revolution, fashion evolution and history combined. Not only was fashion highlighted in the gala night, each family also performed musical presentations and dances based on their era to entertain the audience and us, Judges. There were also surprise awards in the gala night apart from the game category. We gave out awards for the best in costume both for male and female adults and kids, face of the night for male and female, best in family presentation and theme.

The era of each family or teams were as follows according to the eldest of the Senator’s children to the youngest:
